The top five best-selling vehicles of 2024

Finalised new vehicle sales data for 2024 has landed, and a familiar group of models topped the charts last year.

It’s hardly surprising to see Toyota make the list, nor is the presence of three utes from established brands.

Indeed, the only nameplate to drop out of the annual list of top-five sellers was the MG ZS small SUV, which was recently treated to a comprehensive update.

Another family hauler has replaced the ZS, in an all-time record year for new vehicle sales in Australia.

So without further ado, let’s break down the top five best-selling vehicles of the year. These are the vehicles that recorded the most deliveries during the 2024 calendar year, according to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

Ford Ranger

Ford’s ever-popular Ranger ute eked ahead of the Toyota RAV4 to be the best-selling vehicle of 2024, with 62,593 deliveries recorded.

The Ranger became the first Ford model since the EB and ED Falcon (1992/93) to claim back-to-back annual sales victories, and fared the best of any ute in the 2024 CarExpert ratings.

Aside from the introduction of a new off-road ready Tremor variant, few changes were made to the Ranger over the course of 2024. It’s still offered with a choice of three powertrains – a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder, 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, and 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version will join the lineup in 2025.

Pricing ranges from $36,880 before on-road costs for the base single-cab, to $90,440 plus on-roads for the Raptor performance flagship.

Toyota RAV4

As the Ranger is to Ford, the RAV4 has been a sales darling for Toyota over several years including 2024, when it overtook the HiLux to become the Japanese brand’s best-seller for the first time. The Japanese manufacturer delivered 58,718 examples of the RAV4 last year, an increase of 98.2 per cent over the previous year.

The RAV4 range is now powered exclusively by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid engine, mated to a CVT transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive.

Toyota claims outputs of 160kW for front-wheel drive variants, 163kW for all-wheel drive versions, and 221Nm for both. Fuel consumption ranges between 4.7L/100km and 4.8L/100km.

All variants wear a five-star ANCAP safety rating and are backed by Toyota’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

While the entry point sits at $42,260 before on-road costs, our highest scoring model last year was the range-topping Hybrid Edge, which Jack Quick rated 8.3/10.

Toyota HiLux

Rounding out the podium is the Toyota HiLux, further demonstrating Australia’s love of utes. No less than 53,499 HiLux vehicles were delivered in 2024, a decrease on sales in 2023, when the Ranger broke its seven-year streak as Australia’s favourite model.

A total of 29 HiLux variants are offered, ranging from the base single-cab WorkMate manual up to the flagship GR Sport dual-cab.

Four powertrains are available across the lineup. Entry-level WorkMate versions of the ute are powered by either a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder, while the HiLux SR, SR5, and GR Sport are powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder. The V-Active mild-hybrid system adds a motor generator, 48V battery, and DC/DC converter to the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel.

As you’d expect given the expansive nature of the HiLux range, pricing also varies considerably. At the very bottom of the lineup, a base WorkMate can be had for $26,475 plus on-road costs, whereas the top-spec GR Sport will set you back nearly $75,000 before on-road costs.

A few variants were tested by the CarExpert team in 2024, but it was the SR5 with V-Active Technology that rated best, scoring 7.7/10 from tester Jack Quick.

Isuzu D-Max

Isuzu’s D-Max was the third best-selling vehicle in its segment and the fourth most popular overall (30,194 deliveries), behind only Toyota and Ford models.

The Isuzu D-Max is offered with a choice of two four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines: a 1.9-litre with 110kW of power and 350Nm or torque, and a 3.0-litre with 140kW and 450Nm.

It also comes in 25 different flavours, from a 4×2 single-cab for the worksite to 4×4 dual-cab lifestyle variants. At the top of the range sits the new D-Max Blade, a locally developed take on the off-road ute sub-genre.

All D-Max models are covered by a six-year, 150,000km warranty, with logbook servicing required every 12 months or 15,000km.

Our pick of the variants tested in 2024 was the LS-U+, which offers some extra interior conveniences over the rest of the range and the beefier of the two powertrains on offer. It scored 8.1/10 when tested by Max Davies in September.

Mitsubishi Outlander

The Mitsubishi Outlander ranked fifth on the sales charts last year, with 27,613 deliveries recorded.

A popular option in the mid-sized SUV segment, the Outlander can be optioned with either petrol or plug-in hybrid power, although the latter commands a price premium.

Entry-level models come with a 2.5-litre petrol four-cylinder engine, producing 135kW of power and 244Nm of torque, while the 2.4-litre four-cylinder PHEV boosts outputs to 185kW and 450Nm. Power is sent to either the front or all four wheels via a CVT transmission.

Fuel consumption ranges between 1.5L/100km (PHEV) to 8.1L/100km (petrol), depending on the variant.

Pricing kicks off at $37,740 before on-road costs for the base five-seat ES and tops out at $73,790 plus on-roads for the GSR PHEV.

Just below the GSR PHEV sits the plug-in Exceed Tourer, which topped CarExpert’s 2024 ratings with 8.2/10, awarded by James Wong back in July.
