The PGA Tour heads to Texas this week for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. This marks the fifth season the event will be held at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas, but the first since 2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the 2020 edition to be canceled.
All but five of the top 64 players in the world are competing this week. For the sixth year the event follows a pool-play format. The overall field is broken into 16 groups of four, and everyone plays each other once in each group, with one man advancing to single elimination. A won match is a full point and a halved match is a half of a point. The player with the most points at the end of all three matches moves on to the round of 16, and any ties are decided in a sudden-death playoff.

The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play works a little different than most PGA Tour tournaments, since the format is match play rather than stroke play. The first three rounds Wednesday through Friday consist of pool play, with 16 groups of four playing round-robin matches. Each group’s winners move on to a single-elimination bracket over the weekend, with the top 16 being whittled down until the championship match produces the winner. It’s a fitting format while in the midst of the NCAA Tournament.

This week the PGA Tour looks different than any other. Why? Two words: Matchplay. At least in the United States, this is the one week we get to see the pros competing under a different one-on-one format. And since it’s a WGC, a truly elite field has been assembled.

Austin Country Club plays host to three rounds of pool play from Wednesday-Friday this week where golfers will face one another in match play before a quarter of them advance to the Round of 16, which starts on Saturday morning. Sometimes this means we get Jon Rahm vs. Dustin Johnson. Other times it means we get George Coetzee vs. Tom Hoge.

The tournament will begin today 24th March and will be concluded on 28th March 2021. The WGC-Dell Match Play will be played at Austin Country Club, Austin, Texas.

The rules for this event were changed several years ago so that every player is guaranteed three rounds. Group play takes place from Wednesday to Friday as each golfer in the four-golfer pods faces one of the other three golfers in his pod in an 18-hole match-play round (one round per day, and you play everyone in your pod by Friday). The top performer in each pod (16 total) will advance to Saturday’s knockout round. Two match-play rounds are played on Saturday, and two are played on Sunday before a champ is crowned at the end of the week.
