President Donald Trump is making headlines once more when the contents of his letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were made public. Unfortunately for the POTUS, the document might be used against him.
Donald Trump penned what the media labeled as an “angry letter” to Pelosi just as House will hold an impeachment vote on Wednesday, BBC reported. In his letter, he stated that he did not commit “no offences whatsoever.”
Trump is accused of pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for personal gain. This is in reference to his call with Zelensky where he asked for a “favor” before giving Ukraine the military aid it needed to fight off the Russian-backed invasion, according to CNN.
To resist the impeachment process, he prevented “key aides from testifying before the House of Representatives.” He also declined to make an appearance despite the public invitation.
In his letter, Trump claimed that he was deprived of Constitutional Due Process. He also wrote that he was denied the most fundamental rights as stated by the Constitution which includes “the right to present evidence.”
“More due process was afforded to those accused in the Salem Witch Trials,” Trump wrote. The president added that House "cheapened the importance of the very ugly word, impeachment!”
But critics say that Trump’s claims are simply untrue. His legal team would have been allowed to question witnesses as he was actually invited to give his evidence but he declined this invitation.
Even Kim Droscoll, the Mayor of Salem, has something to say about the president’s reference to the Salem Witch trials. “Learn some history,” Droscoll said. The mayor went on to say that while the convictions during the witch trials were made without evidence, there’s “ample evidence” in the case against Trump.
According to CNN, his letter is “another wild document to the mountain of evidence that will be used against him” that just might show him unfit for office. Even Nancy Pelosi, the letter’s recipient, seemed at a loss at first on how to respond to what the president wrote.
“I don't have a reaction. It's ridiculous,” was Pelosi’s initial reaction. “I mean, I haven't full read it. We've been working. I've seen the essence of it. It's really sick.”
